i had to put the "book" down quite a few times, before curiosity finally forced me to complete it. it's gory, creepy, and very very dark....but, i had to know what was going to happen at the end of the novel. the very violent, painfully personal dark material was almost too much for me, and also i was disappointed it wasn't a paranormal story; i thought it was, based on the title and cover picture. but, after reading the novel, i understand the imagery on the cover. it is an accurate "snapshot" of what awaits you in the book.

i did enjoy the writing; it was very well written. throughout the book, the knowledge we get of the (first person) main character's past gets deeper and deeper....it's a bit daunting to follow him down this dark path, but it's a very convincing psychological portrait. and i am quite sure there are many who have actually gone through something like this, who were able to extricate themselves, or deal with their past over time. i wonder if it is a true story....?

i would recommend "bitemarks"; it's a good book. just not a happy one. and maybe not the book you want to read before bed. unless you leave the lights on....you are forewarned!

Bitemarks The Marks Series Book 1 edition by Drew Cross Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

I did not like this book. When I read the descriotion the book sounded interesting. But once I started reading it I never really got into it. the book is a British which I'm not a huge fan of. The story to me was also a tad boring. I didn't really like the characters that much. I will definitely only read this book once.
This book wasn't what I expected as it starts the life of a couple of British bobbies. But the places this novel turns is very unexpected. This is a police procedural with a mix of the "Trueblood" type thrown in, and regressive memories that make you look at everyone a little differently.
I felt like this book was all over the place. The author spent to much time on useless points and not enough on the important ones. I felt like when it was finally getting my interest it became boring again with a bunch of nonsense, then good again and back to a bunch of nonsense. I was very disappointed after reading the reviews from other readers I thought that this book would have been better.....
This lyrical, gritty, hypnotic crime mystery is so much more--it's really the journey of a dark knight in search of his soul in the context of solving a crime within the Goth subculture. Detective Shane Marks is tortured by his past and compelled by obsessions that dangerously intersect with a heinous killer- and in his quest he ultimately takes steps toward redemption. So much more than just a crime novel about the vampire subculture, BiteMarks is a read you won't be able to put down. Walking the streets in black, his 'familiar' Weimaraner at his side, Shane almost assumes a Batman-like mythology that reaches out into the collective subconscious to protect and defend the tortured and helpless in all of us. This is a protagonist we need to see more of. Write on, Mr. Cross!
Tells the story, which seems very popular now days, of an cop who is imperfect in his personal life. More than imperfect, downright kinky. Can your personal life be joe-hard-times and still be an exemplary policeman, judging the world and criminals fairly?? The story goes on....looking into lives and pasts & the present. Found the book hard to keep track of the characters in the beginning, but finally sorted it out and glad I did.
While I am not usually attracted to novels with vampire and fetishism themes, I thought I'd give this book a go (it was free and had good reviews).

I was incredibly surprised by the author's beautiful writing and I adapted quickly to the British English vernacular. A story so wonderfully told that I wanted to read Shane Mark's story even if his cup of tea isn't my cup of tea.

For most of the book, the author does a very good job balancing Shane's anguish/alternative lifestyle and the investigation that drew him to it though he is not authorized to investigate. Unfortunately the balance tips over when the conclusion of the investigation is undermined by confidences that discredit Shane's strength of character and dare I say ethics the author previously established so well.

It was disappointing to be charmed, mesmerized by a novel's character, but by book's end was glad to close him out of my life.
I am reluctant to review this book since I have not finished it. I am disappointed we cannot provide a review without providing a rating. The system fails us on that point. However, sometimes you've just got to say, "I tried, but just could not finish this book." That statement alone is worth something. I read half way through the book and confess it was a chore with every page. With so many glowing reviews, I am sure it was just me. I found it bland and tedious. Perhaps, at another time, when I'm more patient with my reading I would feel differently. However, this simply was not that time. I gave it a 4-star rating, because it simply is not fair to rate a book you have not finished. Blame that on the system. We ought to be able to leave a review without a rating.
