SHOT Is a story of incredible perseverance and hope. Peter and Dara’s faith in their daily lives is an example of how hope is alive. Their story moves from joy, to laughter to tears to a profound understanding of God’s faithfulness. The book is done in such a way that it engages the reader to visualize every moment of their journey. It was difficult to put it down because the book engages you to walk with them through this time in their lives and experience the journey. I would encourage anyone seeking hope in their lives to read this book and be open to what God would have for them.
Incredible, brave, and inspirational are the first few words that came to mind after reading SHOT by Christy Krumm Richard. The author captures a frightening yet enlightening true story about a family called to serve in the country of El Salvador. The author does a thorough job of paralleling the trials of a war-torn country with the DeSoto Family’s journey as missionaries. It can be difficult to publicly divulge our spiritual battles and our difficulties in trusting God completely. But, Pete and Dara share this so humbly and honestly that their story makes them truly relatable to everyone. This story will inspire anyone to reevaluate their relationship with God and better trust in his love, grace, and mercy.
This book reminds me a bit of Ismael Beah's "A Long Way Gone Memoirs of a Boy Soldier." The author does a fantastic job of telling the DeSoto's story from a third-person point of view, but still interjects occasionally to insert important ideas or interpretations of the events from a spiritual perspective (which for me was actually the most enjoyable part of the book). She also captures and describes the emotional highs and lows of the DeSoto's so vividly and precisely. Other third-person narrations sometimes miss the mark in illustrating those emotions, but the author spends a good amount of time really focusing on what was going though the DeSoto's minds as different events unfold. Because of that, I connected more with the DeSoto's on a personal level and was emotionally moved as well throughout the entire story. Would definitely recommend this book if you're looking for an honest story that highlights the highs and lows of taking risks and having faith in your purpose.
Knowing this amazing couple personally makes the book a welcome explanation of a complicated time in their lives. Their positivity, family focus, and resilience was always an inspiration, but is even more so after reading the "rest of the story." I appreciate their underlying values, incredible strength and commitment and am personally stronger for having read this book.
This book is amazing, reads like you are having a wonderful conversation over coffee, and have known them all your life. God's faithfulness displayed in the sacrificial life of a family!
An amazing story of a beautiful and resilient family. Christy's account was honest and human, giving raw insight into the best and the worst of the DeSoto's experiences living and working in El Salvador.
I have learned so much about the country of El Salvador reading this book. I love how descriptive the book is. It reads like a novel. Christy, I'm looking forward to reading your next book whenever you write one! Hopefully soon. )
